Western District Awards

The Western District honors members for distinctive contributions to the profession and service to SHAPE America at the district and national level:

  • A nomination form must be submitted for each applicant. The deadline for nominations is October 2nd, 2023 of each year.
  • Applications for awards are due October 15th, 2023.

Once a nomination form has been submitted, a link to the award application will be emailed.

Western District Honor Award

The Honor Award is the highest recognition the Western District can bestow to an individual who is clearly outstanding in his/her profession with long and distinguished service to health, physical education, recreation, dance, and/or sport.

Western District Service Award

The Western District Service Award recognizes an individual or organization making a significant contribution to the Western District. This award shall be given when uniquely deserved and is therefore not necessarily an annual event and multiple awards may be given in any year. Any individual or organization is eligible to receive this award, in that SHAPE America membership is not a prerequisite, though exceptional leadership and/or service should be exhibited.

Western District College/University Health, Physical Education, Adaptive Physical Education and/or Dance Education Professional of the Year Award

This award honors a college/university professional in health, physical education, adaptive physical education or dance pedagogy.

Western District Scholars Award

This award recognizes individuals from the Western District who enrich the depth and scope of health, leisure, sport and movement related activities by generating research and disseminating findings to the profession and the public.

Citations are awarded on the recommendation of the current Western District president and on approval of the board.

Western District Presidential Citation Award

Presidential Citation Awards are given in recognition and appreciation of individuals and/or organizations that have played a significant role in the development of the profession, advocacy for the mission of the Western District and/or support for the president in their leadership role.

Teacher of the Year Awards

The SHAPE America Teacher of the Year (TOY) program recognizes outstanding teachers in adapted physical education, school health education, dance education, and physical education at the elementary, middle and high school levels.

To be eligible for a Western District Teacher of the Year award, individuals must have received their state's Teacher of the Year award.
