Emporia State Professor To Be Honored at SHAPE America National Convention

RESTON, VA, February 24, 2015 – Dr. Joella Mehrhof, a professor and graduate advisor in the Department of Health, Physical Education & Recreation at Emporia State University in Emporia, Kansas, will be honored with the SHAPE America Honor Award for meritorious service to the profession by SHAPE America – Society of Health and Physical Educators during its 130th National Convention & Expo, March 17-21 in Seattle, Washington. The Honor Award, which recognizes recipients for their personal integrity, devoted service to the professions, and noteworthy contributions to the advancement of health and physical education, will be given at the Professional Excellence Awards Ceremony on Thursday, March 19, at the Sheraton Seattle Hotel.  

According to SHAPE America President Dolly Lambdin of the University of Texas at Austin, "Joella Mehrhof is an exemplary role model for her best teaching practices through her instruction, research, presentations and publications. She has devoted her career to promoting physically active lifestyles for young children and adults." 

The author of more than 40 books/journal articles, Dr. Mehrhof has made more than 150 professional presentations at state, regional, and national conferences. She has provided over 50 in-services for educators across the United States and has organized an additional 50 education workshops held on the Emporia State University campus. In addition, Dr. Mehrhof has secured 20 grants totaling over two million dollars.

Known for her unselfish service and contributions to the profession, community and university, Dr. Mehrhof has held leadership positions as president of the Kansas Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (KAHPERD) and Vice-President of Sport and Physical Education for Central District AHPERD, a member of the NASPE Public Relations Committee and president of the faculty at Emporia State University. 

In 2011, she was awarded the Margie Hanson Award for distinguished service to physical education at the elementary level, and in 2010 she received the Outstanding Mentor of the Year Award from NASPE for her accomplishments as a leader in teacher education. Among her many other accomplishments she has been recognized as a Central District Scholar; Kansas Outstanding Online Educator; Roe R. Cross Distinguished Professor; and the Xi Phi Outstanding Faculty Award.
