Northshore School District Physical Education Coordinator to be Honored at SHAPE America National Convention
RESTON, VA, February 19, 2015 – Renee Colleran, elementary
physical education coordinator for Northshore School District in Bothell, WA, will be honored with the Margie R. Hanson Elementary Physical Education Distinguished
Service Award by SHAPE America – Society of Health and Physical Educators during
its 130th National Convention & Expo, March 17-21 in Seattle, Washington. Colleran will be honored for her outstanding
contributions to children in the field of physical education at the SHAPE
America Celebration of Professional Excellence Ceremony on Thursday, March 19,
at the Sheraton Seattle Hotel.
The award is named for Margie R. Hanson, a dedicated SHAPE America member for 26 years who was a pioneer in promoting physical education for children through her own teaching, advocacy and program support.
In addition to serving as the Northshore district coordinator for elementary physical education, Colleran also teaches adapted physical education and general physical education full time. She oversees state mandated assessments, and is the department chair of her school as well as a member of the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction cadre of physical educators assisting with policy in Washington State.
A past president of the SHAPE America Northwest District and Washington AHPERD (now SHAPE Washington), she has presented numerous times at state, district, and national level conferences.
She is a current Board of Director member for SHAPE America. Renee has served SHAPE Washington (formally WAHPERD) as a long time board member first as adapted physical education division leader then as part of the executive committee with service as President. She then began her term with the Northwest District serving as part of the executive committee and during her term saw the district through the beginning transition with the name change and all that followed with the restructure.
She earned her undergraduate teaching degree in health and physical education as well as her Master of Arts and Teaching from Washington State University. For more information about SHAPE America's National Convention & Expo, visit the website.
