Northshore School District Teacher Honored With National Award
RESTON, VA, April 5, 2016 — Renee Colleran, a physical education teacher for Northshore School District in Washington, will be honored with the SHAPE America Honor Award for meritorious service by SHAPE America – Society of Health and Physical Educators. The award, which recognizes recipients for their personal integrity, devoted service to the profession, and noteworthy contributions to the advancement of health and physical education, will be presented at the Professional Excellence Awards Ceremony on Thursday, April 7, during the SHAPE America National Convention & Expo in Minneapolis.
"Renee Colleran is an exemplary role model for both her teaching practices and her willingness to share her knowledge with others in the profession," says SHAPE America President Steve Jefferies, professor emeritus, Central Washington University. "She has devoted her career to promoting healthy, active lifestyles for young people."
In addition to teaching general physical education and adapted physical education, Colleran serves as the Northshore District's in-service coordinator for elementary physical education. She oversees mandated assessments and is her school's department chair. She is also a member of the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction cadre of physical educators assisting with policy in Washington state.
A teacher for more than 30 years, Colleran has presented numerous times at state, district and national conferences, and is a current board member of SHAPE America. She is also a past president of SHAPE America Northwest District and the Washington Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (now SHAPE Washington). She was the recipient of the 2015 SHAPE America Margie R. Hanson Elementary Physical Education Distinguished Service Award and the 2014 SHAPE Washington Meritorious Service Award.
Colleran received a Bachelor of Science in physical education with a minor in health and a Master of Arts and Teaching in physical education with an emphasis on adapted physical education, both from Washington State University.
