Retired Hopkinton School District Teacher Honored With National Award
RESTON, VA, April 6, 2016 — Curt Martin, a retired physical education teacher from Contoocook, NH, will be honored with the SHAPE America Honor Award for meritorious service by SHAPE America – Society of Health and Physical Educators. The award, which recognizes recipients for their personal integrity, devoted service to the profession, and noteworthy contributions to the advancement of health and physical education, will be presented at the Professional Excellence Awards Ceremony on Thursday, April 7, during the SHAPE America National Convention & Expo in Minneapolis.
Martin retired in 2009 after more than 30 years as a physical education teacher, first at Hopkinton Middle/High School and then at Maple Street School, both in the Hopkinton School District. During 26 of those years, he also coached multiple high school sports at both the junior varsity and varsity levels. His teams were state champions for a number of years and he was recognized multiple times as Coach of the Year.
"Throughout his teaching and coaching career, Curt Martin has been an exemplary role model for his players and students," says SHAPE America President Steve Jefferies, professor emeritus, Central Washington University. "He has also demonstrated his devotion to the profession through service at the local, district and national levels."
Since retiring from teaching, Martin has continued coaching men's and women's basketball at New Hampshire Technical Institute in Concord, NH. In 2010, he was inducted into the New Hampshire Interscholastic Athletic Association Hall of Fame.
Over the years, Martin has been an active member of the New Hampshire Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (NHAHPERD), serving as president on two occasions. He has also held many leadership positions within SHAPE America Eastern District, and has served as a delegate to the national assembly of SHAPE America.
