Chronic Disease and Physical Activity

November is American Diabetes Month!

Did you know physical activity can help prevent many chronic health conditions, like type 2 diabetes? Most physical education teachers and coaches will encounter students with the chronic health condition that may affect their participation in PE and sport activities.

In fact, more than 200,000 people younger than 20 have been diagnosed with diabetes.

Be Prepared to Teach Students with Diabetes

SHAPE America's JOPERD Viewpoint column, "Being Prepared to Teach and Coach Students with Diabetes" addresses what physical educators and coaches should keep in mind, including:

  •  Encouragement of regular physical activity, including PE
  •  Making sure all diabetic supplies are readily accessible
  •  Communication with school staff regarding any concerns about the diabetic student
