Spring has been busy for GAHPERD! On May 1, we hosted our Southeast District Workshop at Valdosta State University. Over 100 members came to the event, which was sponsored by US Games and OPEN. Advocacy was also a priority that week as GAHPERD sponsored a group of students from Peeples Elementary to attend the State Board of Education meeting on May 3. The students opened the meeting by teaching the adults in the room about juggling and everyone had a “hands on” opportunity to try their hand at the skill. Coincidentally, this was the same meeting to vote on final approval of the new Georgia Standards of Excellence for Physical Education. The standards were approved and GAHPERD had a huge role in the development, with several members involved in the process. Our next event is the annual Summer Institute hosted by Kennesaw State University, June 7-8, 2018.
