Tennessee State Affiliate News

Updated March 2018

Greetings from Tennessee! We are very happy to be partnering with Southern District to co-host the 2018 SHAPE America National Convention & Expo and hope you have a great time experiencing Nashville! There are many things going on in Nashville right now, from catching a Predators game, to visiting Cheekwood Botanical Gardens, or kayaking down the Cumberland River then grabbing a bite to eat at one of the many places in Nashville. One thing is for sure, there is something to do for every age, any time of day! If you haven’t already, make sure you check out the hashtag on Twitter #SHAPENashville to see a glimpse of Nashville.

Tennessee is on the verge of passing new legislation that would greatly improve our state. The “Tom Cronan Physical Education Act” would require elementary students to have physical education taught by a licensed physical education teacher a minimum of two 30-minute classes per normal five-day school week. Currently there is no law set to how many times or minutes per week students receive physical education, so this bill would be a great start at improving our state!

The bill is named after Joan Cronan, University of Tennessee Athletic Director Emeritus, who is being inducted into the SHAPE America Hall of Fame on Friday, March 23. TAHPERD can’t wait to see many familiar faces as we welcome everyone to Nashville!
