Virginia held a full day workshop in August at Emory and Henry College. We had 82 in attendance and offered a variety of sessions from presenters across the state- a lot of which are current board members! It was great to offer this workshop in this part of our state!
In November 2019, we held our annual convention this year in Virginia Beach, VA. We had 400 members in attendance, had 5 pre-convention sessions/re-certification opportunities, and more than 100 programs. Our members were able to see 19 of exhibitors! Our keynote speaker was the Director, Public Policy & Advocacy for SHAPE America - the Society of Health and Physical Educators, Carly Wright.
This year VAHPERD started on its fourth year of a grant from DMV. “Choose Your Vibe — Stay Alive” is a three-part project that uses youth social media engagement campaigns to norm non-drinking behavior and alcohol-free driving, engage youth in a peer-peer approach, and increase the messaging around underage drinking and impaired driving at the local school-community level.
In Jan. 2019, we held another successful lobby day with almost 20 VAHPERD members. We are continuing to work with our lobbyist to advocate for HPERD programs and legislation.Our advocacy committee and lobbyist are gearing up for our next Speak OUT! Day on Monday, Jan. 27th, 2020.
Virginia legislation has been updated and in Jan. 2020 the Department of Education is working to update our standards of learning to reflect. The SOL revisions include additions to mental/emotional health content and specifics to electronic cigarettes/substance prevention education.
