Preparing Students for a Physically Literate Life 

Physical educators play a unique and critical role in helping to guide young students in their journey toward becoming physically literate.

There are numerous physical activities and traditional exercises that can be enriched to develop physical literacy. In an article published in the January 2017 issue of JOPERD, "Preparing Students for a Physically Literate Life," SHAPE America's CEO Paul Roetert and Senior Director of Programs Cheryl Richardson, along with University of Manitoba Associate Professor and upcoming SHAPE America National Convention keynote speaker Dean Kriellaars and Scottsdale Sports Clinic Physiotherapy Associate Todd Ellenbecker, describe a sample set of exercises that teach motor skills and develop confidence in students, which may have a direct transfer and application to lifelong learning.
