FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
High School Students Find Value in Health and Physical Education
RESTON, VA, Aug. 1, 2022 — SHAPE America ‒ Society of Health and Physical Educators today announced highlights from a recent myOptions®/SHAPE America research study, which reveals valuable insight into the attitudes of high school students toward health and physical education (HPE).
The study, which was conducted during the 2021-2022 academic year, includes a national sample of 32,159 high school students. The results show that most high school students currently participating in health and physical education classes have a positive perception of HPE and its impact on their lives in and out of school.
- More than half of students report that HPE is important to their future health, as well as a variety of additional benefits such as: helps me work well with others (45.3%); relieves stress (42.6%); teaches me to accept and respect myself and others (32.7%); gives me confidence (30.1%); helps me to be a better student (28.1%); and helps me focus (27.0%).
- High school students also report developing beneficial skills in health and physical education class that are useful in their lives, such as: skills necessary to play sports or be physically active (70.9%); importance of being physically active (64.6%); how to set fitness goals and maintain fitness levels (54.6%); making smart decisions on behaviors that impact health (53.3%); setting goals to enhance health (51.9%); and practicing behaviors that enhance and reduce risks (44.4%).
“These results show that young people see the value of embracing a healthy and physically active lifestyle,” says SHAPE America President Kymm Ballard of Campbell University in Buies Creek, NC. “It’s important for parents, administrators and legislators to prioritize health and physical education. Students’ well-being depends on it.”
