Teaching SEL in Health Education

Participants should complete the following prior to the first live session on August 21, 2023:

1. Download the text, Teaching Social and Emotional Learning in Health Education.
2. Read Chapter 1 (Introduction) and Chapter 2 (Pedagogical Practice).
3. Watch the Module 1 recording.
4. Complete the assignment:
• In one or two paragraphs, describe your current practice of teaching skills-based health and SEL.
• Select and describe an effective pedagogical practice and how to use it in practice.

This module includes an introduction to teaching SEL in health education, an overview of neuroscience, an explanation of backwards design (including assessment and instruction), and an explanation of effective pedagogical practices.

Learning Objectives:

• Describe and reflect on your current practice of teaching skills-based health and SEL.
• Compare your current planning style to backwards design planning.
• Select and describe an effective pedagogical practice and how to use it in practice.

This module illustrates how to align and teach the SEL competency self-awareness with NHES Standard 2, analyzing influences.

Learning Objectives:

• Outline how identifying emotions contributes to self-awareness.
• Determine how self-confidence, accurate self-perception, and recognizing strengths contributes to self-awareness.
• Identify how accurately assessing one’s interests, strengths, and limitations contributes to self-awareness.
• Recognize the importance of helping youth develop self-efficacy.
• Discuss the importance of helping youth develop a growth mindset.

This module explains how to align and teach the SEL competency self-management NHES Standard 7 and the SEL competency, responsible decision making, with NHES Standard 5.

Learning Objectives:

• Discover strategies to support the development of self-management skills.
• Explain strategies to help youth regulate their emotions, cognitions, and behaviors.
• Recognize the importance of setting and achieving personal and educational goals.
• Identify the importance of developing organizational skills.
• Compare the DECIDE model and CASEL’s responsible decision-making skills.
• Discuss responsible decision-making units from each grade span.

This module illustrates how to align and teach the SEL competency social awareness with NHES Standard 3, accessing valid information and the SEL competency communication skills with NHES Standard 4.

Learning Objectives:

• Describe the importance of taking the perspective of and empathizing with others, respecting others, and recognizing community resources.
• Recognize the importance of appreciating diversity, respecting others, and persevering in addressing challenges.
• Discuss the importance of establishing and maintaining heathy and rewarding relationships and communicating clearly.
• Outline strategies to negotiate conflict constructively and seek and offer help when needed.
• Explain strategies to resist inappropriate social pressure and seek and offer help when needed.
