The aspect I like most about being a volunteer leader: working with like minded individuals from ALL over toward a common goal. We are colleagues but have become friends.
I am so fortunate to be a part of SHAPE. I volunteered to join a council because I wanted to give back. When the chair position opened up, I applied. Now, I’m steering a council to create resources like the wellness series. My council is composed of amazing members from all over America. The remarkable staff and leadership at SHAPE are always responsive and work to help see our ideas come to life. The aspect I like most about being a volunteer leader: working with like minded individuals from ALL over toward a common goal. We are colleagues but have become friends. Taking the road less traveled to become a volunteer leader has made all the difference as a professional and a person.

Teaching can be stressful, often presenting frustration and isolation. Being allied with other volunteer leaders offered a source of strength and encouragement.
Reflecting upon my 50 yrs. of AAHPERD/SHAPE & WI membership (over 25yrs. involved in leadership), I realize both have provided me with professional vision and innovative programs and products to help me persevere and overcome challenges while driving my teaching to advocate for ‘healthy active lifestyles’ for all. Navigating through my initial leadership WI Representative Assembly position, to serving as both WI & Midwest President and continued involvement on two National committees, has allowed me to connect and collaborate with professionals across the nation. Teaching can be stressful, often presenting frustration and isolation. Being allied with other volunteer leaders offered a source of strength and encouragement. Furthermore, volunteering as a leader has provided me with avenues to network, explore, and grow while developing lifelong friendships. It allowed me to serve others and to ‘live my passion’ for Health & Physical Education.
Through serving as a volunteer leader, I am able to get reenergized even more often through the work I am doing with SHAPE America.
"I love serving as a volunteer leader for SHAPE America because I am able to connect with amazing teachers everywhere! I also love that I am able to give back to the organization that helps motivate me to be a better teacher. I have been a SHAPE America member since I was in college and every time I go to a national convention, I get reenergized to go back to my students and work harder for them. Through serving as a volunteer leader, I am able to get reenergized even more often through the work I am doing with SHAPE America. I am able to stay current in best practices and gain new ideas from teachers all over the world."
