A B3 (Brain, Body, Balance) program can help satisfy a student’s need for more movement and prepare their brains for optimal learning. Learn how Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools are implementing "B3" motor skills intervention programs before, during and after school to help preK-5 students perform better academically and behaviorally.

Using Gamification Techniques to Increase Physical Literacy In School-Age Children

Description:
Gamification emphasizes that participants not only engage, but immerse in the task they are participating in (Johnson, 2016). Evidence of benefits in problem solving, decision making, risk taking, leadership development, pro-social behavior, and learning from opponents (Kapp, 2012). Participants will be walked through techniques in introducing behavior modification techniques (e.g. token economy system, etc.) in learning models used by popular video and tabletop games to increase student engagement in and out of the classroom.

This workshop will provide real-world strategies for early childhood educators and physical educators in engaging young children in physical activity. Participants will learn developmentally appropriate physical activities for preschoolers that support fundamental movement skills. These activities are easily taught in preschools, childcare homes, and physical education settings. Presenters will explain how physical activity influences young children’s brain development and kindergarten readiness, and offer best practices for adding physical activity into early childhood settings. Session attendees will receive SHAPE America's newest early childhood book, Moving With Words & Actions.

Cost:
$40- convention attendees, $75- non-convention attendees.

Developing Physical Literacy in the Young Child

The co-authors of a new SHAPE America book — Moving With Words & Actions— lead this interactive session on how to instill the basic components of physical literacy in preschool and primary-grade children through activities that align with SHAPE America's National Standards and Grade-Level Outcomes for K-12 Physical Education. Participants will: 1) view homemade props and age-appropriate equipment; 2) identify ways to enhance the child’s language skills, and 3) obtain helpful ideas for successful lesson planning (edTPA).
