American Journal of Health Education Workshop

This workshop will be for the Editor-in-Chief and members of the journal’s editorial board to present basic information, outline common problems to avoid when submitting manuscripts, and provide an overview of the key themes of the journal that will lead to the following breakout sessions: School Health, Physical Activity, Health Behavior Theory, and a detailed overview of the submission and reviewer process.

Lesson Planning for Skills-Based Health Education in the Secondary Classroom

During this four-hour session, participants will move beyond theory and into development and creation of a skills-based health education program. Participants will leave the session with examples of learning activities and assessments designed to support students in developing skills of the National Health Education Standards to proficiency so they can maintain or enhance their health. We will also discuss ways to effectively integrate functional information into units to support skill development.

Nutrition Bootcamp! Shape up Your Health Literacy and Teaching Skills

Does it feel like dietary advice is always changing? Separate fact from fiction in this dynamic workshop that will hone your nutrition knowledge and teaching skills using interactive activities, technology tools, and goal-setting resources. Attendees will gain the skills needed to empower students, co-workers, and parents to create a school environment that supports healthy lifestyle choices. Tools for accessing, analyzing, applying and communicating nutrition information will be explored. Mobile devices are encouraged, but not required.

Applying Skills-Based Health Ed Strategies in the Classroom

This session will focus on applying skills-based health education strategies that are aligned with the National Health Education Standards and provide you with ideas that you can use in your classroom Monday morning. Participants will spend time experiencing hands-on activities that can be modified for use at all skill and academic levels. Come gain firsthand experience in applying skills-based strategies in a classroom environment and see how much fun your students will have as participants.

Take a Stand for Health Education

Current trends at the national, state and local levels indicate that it is a critical time for health education. Advocacy efforts must be enhanced to improve health outcomes of our students and society. This session will discuss ways to identify and engage key stakeholders in health education at the local, state and national levels, as well as share ideas, discuss challenges and opportunities, and inspire each other to take a stand for health education!

50 Million Strong: Health Assessments to Make This a Reality!

This session will provide participants with the opportunity to access more than a thousand health education assessment items in each health skill: accessing information analyzing influences, interpersonal communication, decision-making, goal-setting, self-management, and advocacy. Participants can utilize the items in their K-12 health classes to assess their students. More importantly, the validity and reliability of the items have been tested and established. Assessment items include multiple choice, short answer, extended response, and performance-based tasks.
