Sean Nevills is a lifetime member of SHAPE America and current host for the SHAPE America EDI Podcast. As a former project director for SHAPE America, Sean led the CDC-funded COVID-19 initiatives for the 2020-21 school year. Previously, Sean served as director of health and physical education for the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. He is a licensed K-12 physical educator who has taught adapted PE, high school PE, and virtual classes throughout his teaching career. Sean’s work in education includes curriculum development, employee and community wellness, and educational equity. Sean has nearly 15 years of football coaching experience from the youth level through college and several years of experience coaching track and field. He is an active member of Missouri SHAPE and serves as chair of MOSHAPE’s Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Committee.

In the last 30 years, Troy E. Boddy, Ed.D., has been an elementary school teacher, Reading Recover teacher, staff development teacher, assistant principal, principal, and director of equity for two of the largest schools systems in Maryland.

Recently retired as director of Equity Initiatives for Montgomery County Public Schools in Rockville, Maryland, Boddy and his team were responsible for supporting the development practices, policies, and procedures that create access, opportunities to learn, and equitable academic and social-emotional outcomes for underserved students.

Boddy is co-founder of Student Equity Advocates and co-founder of the Building Our Network of Diversity (BOND) Project, a grassroots effort to retain males of color in the teaching profession.

Since entering the field of education, Daryl Howard, Ph.D., has been exemplary in his efforts to make a positive impact in our society. Dr. Howard stands alongside some of the most talented and committed educators and organizers that share a passion for enlightening young people. He is employed by the Montgomery County public school system (MCPS) as well as McDaniel College and Prince George’s Community College as a lecturer in the education and sociology departments.

In MCPS, Howard serves as an equity instructional specialist whose work and research interests include race and cultural proficiency, social emotional learning, and the triumphs and challenges of African American male students. As the chairperson of Maryland State Department of Education’s Task Force on Equity and Excellence for Black Boys, he researches and recommends policy and practice to disrupt harmful narratives, decrease disproportionality, and elevate achievement. Howard is also instrumental in the work of the Building our Network of Diversity (BOND) Project, where he leads initiatives focused on the recruitment, development and retention of male educators of color, as well as empowerment of underserved male students.

Dr. Howard is the author of Complex People: Insights at the Intersection of Black Culture and American Social Life, a work that examines Black culture within the context of the mainstream ideas of race, gender, and education.

Kenneth M. Smith is a National Board Certified Teacher and Montgomery County’s Washington Post Teacher of the Year for 2018. As a lead teacher in Maryland’s Montgomery County Public School system, he has taught several courses under the social studies umbrella including United States Government, AP US History, and African-American Studies. Currently he teaches Introduction to Sociology and a course that he designed for the county called Hip-Hop History and Culture. He is a strong advocate for teacher leadership outside of the classroom as well. He serves on the leadership team for the BOND (Building our Network of Diversity) Project which is an initiative focused on increasing the hiring, development and retention of male educators of color. He is also on the executive committee for the Minority Scholars Program (MSP), a youth-driven, social justice initiative designed to address the opportunity gaps that exist within the educational system. He’s dedicated to building the capacity of educators to be reflective, culturally responsive practitioners and social justice advocates for traditionally marginalized learners. Currently, MSP is partnering with the NEA to train students to lead professional development for teachers on how to engage their students on issues dealing with racial injustice in the classroom.

Cara Grant, Ed.D., is a supervisor for preK-12 health and physical education in the 14th largest school district in the United States. She also supports the Physical Education Master’s Certification Program at the University of Maryland College Park. Her work infuses and prioritizes equity, diversity, and inclusion so all students are included and welcomed in curriculum, instruction, and teaching practices.

Patricia Morgan, Ph.D., is an innovative and passionate educator and leader with a heart for equity, access, inclusion, and social justice. She is an experienced coordinator of science, health, and physical education programs. In addition to her work in the K-12 sector, she works in higher education as an adjunct professor. In her spare time, she studies and presents on culturally relevant pedagogy, diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), and STEM at local, national, and international conferences.

Sue Scheppele is a doctoral physical education fellow at Springfield College in Springfield, MA. She taught preK-8 physical education for seven years and was a lead PE teacher in the Houston Independent School District. In addition, she was a high school health and physical education teacher for three years in Pittsburgh. Sue is a certified DEI trainer for the Anti-Defamation League and received the Walter Kase Award for teacher excellence in 2017.

Mara Simon, Ed.D., is an assistant professor in the Department of Physical Education and Health Education at Springfield College. Her research interests include culturally relevant pedagogy in PE and addressing racial inequity and whiteness in PE teacher education.

John Strong is an associate professor within the HPE Department at Niagara County Community College (NCCC) in Sanborn, NY. He is also the chief diversity and equity officer (CDEO) at NCCC and enjoys using his capacity as CDEO to inform his interactions within the SHAPE America EDI Committee.

Kennedra Tucker is a K-12 health and physical education specialist. A Maryland educator for 14 years, Kennedra has been recognized as a 2017 National Board Certified Teacher, the 2018 SHAPE Maryland Middle School Physical Education Teacher of the Year, and a SHAPE Maryland past president. She is currently a member of the SHAPE America EDI Committee and is presently pursuing an Ed.D. from the University of Maryland, College Park in school system leadership.
