Jamie Sparks, President-Elect, SHAPE America

The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) designates health and physical education as part of a student’s well-rounded education, making these subjects eligible for federal funds and increased support. Title IV, Part A of ESSA was appropriated at $1.1 billion for the 2018-19 school year, which is an increase of $700 million over the previous year. With health and physical education listed as priorities under this ESSA block grant, local advocacy over the upcoming months about how this funding is spent — as well as funding for Titles I & II — will be critical.

In this webinar, Carly Wright, Jamie Sparks and Karen Johnson identify key themes in ESSA for health and physical education, highlight important timelines for implementation and offer the critical “next steps” all advocates and teachers must take to leverage this opportunity in schools.

Research conducted at the Learning to Teach Physical Education Research program at The Ohio State University has shown that teachers who produce strong learning gains in their students organize the teaching of content to their students in fundamentally different ways than most teachers.

Our understanding of how these teachers teach has improved greatly in the past decade, and in this webinar, I will share what we have learned from these teachers — the ways they think, plan and teach content in K-12 physical education.

Daily recess contributes to the recommended 60 minutes of daily physical activity and helps put all children on the path to health and physical literacy. During recess, students choose the physical activities they want to engage in and have the opportunity to apply the knowledge and skills learned in an effective health and physical education program.

Using resources developed by CDC and SHAPE America, this webinar will help you learn how to incorporate, implement and evaluate recess as part of a comprehensive school physical activity program (CSPAP).
