May the Fourth be with You: Flash Mob Dance

SHAPE America Member M. Leanne White, St. Louis, MO

Inspired by former First Lady Michelle Obama’s initiative to raise a “Healthier Generation of Kids,” the Let’s Move! Move Your Body Flash Mob originated in 2014 in St. Louis in collaboration with St. Louis Public Schools, Let’s Move! STL and Healthy Schools Health Communities (HSHC).

Lead by longtime SHAPE America member and HSHC Project Director M. Leanne White, the fourth annual Let’s Move! Move Your Body Flash Mob will take place on Friday, May 4 at 9:45 am (local time) at Busch Stadium and all HSHC schools across Missouri. Featuring Beyonce’s Move Your Body, Cruz’s Dynamite, with choreography created by team members for Let’s Move! STL, the dance steps will be performed by Saint Louis Public School’s Carr Lane Visual Performing Arts students. This year’s theme for the event is “May the Fourth be with You.”

The music, video and dance steps have been shared with all the PE teachers, who then collaborate with their colleagues in their individual schools to hold their own event, dancing across the school district at the same time to the same music. Last year the Flash Mob grew to include approximately 52,000 students in 33 different schools across Missouri. This year’s event will include Aetna staff members from at least five states to participate/dance, so we anticipate an even larger number of participants.

“This event could grow by leaps and bounds, if my fellow SHAPE America members participate across the nation,” said Leanne White, SLPS Project Director. “There’s still plenty of time to teach your students the dance.”

The 2018 Flash Mob dance is, Dynamite, and the materials are available here.
